I bought a set of 5 NeoPixel rings, with 24, 16, 12, 8 and 1 pixel that fit inside each other. The Data Out connection from the outside ring was connected to the Data In on the next ring and so on, giving a large set of addressable WS2812 Pixels. I used a cut-up servo lead for the final connection to the outside world, which was then driven by a Pi Zero (Raspberry Pi).
My blog post explaining in a little more detail is at:https://rpikitchen.wordpress.com/2016/09/08/ws2812b-led-ring-driven-from-a-pi-zero/
I've uploaded a video showing the final product.
