Why I did it this way, was that when I printed it I haven't ever used a printer myself and a friend was using one and I asked if we could print something together and he asked me would the design be ready the next day. If Ill ever print more, Ill figure a better way.

I havent really measured the size of the rod, but it tightly slides in the hole on the spool center. With mine I just printed these things and went to a hardware shop for ideas how to fix it together. Not the smartest way. There is a butterfly nut on the other end holding the spool in place and to hold it in place or allow it to spin. I still need to do some kind of stopper to keep it on the axis so I dont lose it underwater.

Hey sorry for the long due reply. You could modify the end on the handle to take a locknut where you could attach the threaded rod. I think that might be the best option. In mine, in the handle there is this part which name I dont know, but its like a spacer that has a flathead on the handles side and inside the spacer there is threads. Sorry I dont know the technical name so I cant even find a pic, but it a bit like this but there is a flathead slot in the larder end.

And then there is a nut on the other side side squeezing it together.
I hope you understand.
But yea, like I wrote, its not a ready product or anything, it requires you to make some modifications and think :)
