This mount is designed to direct a small portion of the air from the fan down into the space between the bottom of the end effector and the top of the heater blocks. This is intended to prevent heat from accumulating in this area and potentially melting the end effector. As a side effect this also directs more air past the lower mass of the heat sink which should help sharpen the temperature gradient across the heat break.
