The case is contoured and wider at the bottom. It stands well on it's own but if its standing on a table with a lot of activity going on, "Party Time", it can easily be hit and fall over. This ring just slips over the top of the case. Let it fall to the bottom and give it a slight push to be flush with the surface. The contour holds it in place securely. The case is now VERY stable. When on the go, just pop it off.Enjoy!!!
