> While on the subject of collaborating, perhaps YouMagine should have Ideas/Designs managed by multiple users.

Yes, we were thinking of that, it would really make sense. I'd even like to see that for designs. But multiple collaborators + a single owner (who can transfer rights) would enable projects with a larger scope.

I would prefer if you added the PNP-idea since my project is more periferal and I don't have any good reference documents. Perhaps Jeff would be the best suited for creating a presentation of the whole project.

I could have a go at the vision part, but I lack smd component reels and PCBs.

While on the subject of collaborating, perhaps YouMagine should have Ideas/Designs managed by multiple users.

I think that etching should be possible. It's been documented somewhere on the RepRap blog & wiki, although back then, the accuracy and detail was terrible. Plotting with a resistive ink marker would probably be less messy than PLA, though.

For a pick-n-place system, I would probably want two cameras. One mounted on the print head to calibrate the system and check the alignment of the placed components. Then another (fixed) camera filming from below to identify the orientation and position of the component being picked and placed.

I actually have some basic experience of computer vision. And I'm sporadically working on a real time CV hobby project.

I don't know if it has been tried, but shouldn't it be possible to also prototype circuit boards using the Ultimaker? PLA seems to be resilient to many chemicals. Laying a layer of PLA to mark the routes and etching the usual way in a bath.

I just got another e-mail from Jeff who was at Maker Faire SF, showing of his impressive pick-and-place setup that was based on the Ultimaker.
http://tempoautomation.com/maker-faire-detroit-recap/

His e-mail address is jeff@, I'm sure he won't mind if you drop him a note to show him what you've made. I remember he was very excited about adding computer vision.

I think where you're going with the overhead camera, the feeder tool that I made and the rest of the puzzle pieces from Jeff could really become something awesome... In fact. You should add this to "Ideas" and connect your designs to it! if you don't I'd be happy to do this. It'll have a bigger chance of succes if someone else manages it. I'm managing more projects than is good for their quality (or good for me, for that matter). I will at least upload my pick-n-place design here so that it can also be connected.

In fact, I'll point Jeff to your design...

I remember your pick-n-place project, have you made some progress? As this case is designed the magnification is quite extreme. The two images of resistors are taken with a move of 500 microns. This also means the focus is very sensitive. I think a lower magnification would be better.

I was planing to writing a application to move the camera around using the mouse, kind of like Google Maps. That was 7 months ago and I haven't got around to it yet.

I'm starting to be able to imaging what it would look like when mounted on the Ultimaker, but a real-life picture alongside the pretty renderings would be great to have. It would facilitate my understanding of this mount. Note that this would also be great for computer vision and combining an Ultimaker cartesian to do pick-n-place. One of my own pet projects from way back: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7291
